Adult Learn to Sail - CANSail

The CANSail 1&2 program is ideal for beginners looking to learn how to sail. The courses uses small and responsive boat that are exciting, but stable in teaching the fundamental skills of sailing. The course is taught by an experienced Sail Canada instructor. Course curriculum includes:

CANSail 1 – Introduction to sailing. CANSail 1 teaches sailors the fundamental sailing skills including basic sheeting, steering, and boat handling on all points of sail. Sailors can sail within defined boundaries set by an instructor

CANSail 2 – Basic sailing. CANSail 2 teaches sailors to adjust their bodies and boats for changes in direction and wind speed while sailing and to perform boat-handling manoeuvres in a controlled manner while in a controlled setting.


Courses run Tuesday OR Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm, 6 Consecutive Weeks

Adult Basic Cruising

This course is for those interested in keelboat sailing. The Basic Cruising course will explain seamanship and boat-handling skills required for sailboat cruising. The course teaches you to enjoy a day sail, safely and efficiently in moderate wind and sea conditions. This Sail Canada certification course is taught by a certified instructor and provides an internationally recognized certification. Whether your goal is learning or upgrading your skills, chartering a boat or becoming a boat owner, this course will get you heading in the right direction.


Courses run Monday & Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm for 4 Consecutive Weeks OR Saturday & Sunday 9am-4pm for 2 Consecutive Weekends. Maximum of 4 students per instructor. All courses include theory lessons, practical on water, exam, textbook and logbook.

Youth Keelboat Sailing

This course introduces youth sailors to keel boat sailing while teaching the basics of cruising. The focus of this standard is on the development of basic sailing and seamanship skills for crewing or skippering. The course will follow the basic cruising curriculum and provide the students with the basic crewing certification. (Min 3 participants, Max 6)

1 week course, from 9am to 4pm similar to Junior Club courses

Recommended Age - 12 to 18 years of age.

It is encouraged, but not necessary, for participants have completed CANSail 1 as they will be sailing a 34ft keel boat and require a certain sailing knowledge.

Wet Feet

Young children spend time on and off the water to gently introduce them to the culture of sailing and Junior Club at RCYC. Instructors experienced with children aged 7 and under, work with this group to maintain a safe and fun environment. Sailing sessions are complimented with a variety of activities around the island to keep kids having fun at all times! (Lunch program included) (Max 20 kids/session)

Enjoy being on the water during this week long program participating in different water sports. Participants will be introduced to Sailing, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), Kayaking and Windsurfing to mix up their week. This is not a certification course and the emphasis will be having fun on the water. Sessions are complimented with a variety of activities around the Island to keep kids having fun at all times. CANSail 3&4

This month-long program will help sailors take their skills and knowledge to the next level with the introduction of trapeze and spinnaker. There will be an opportunity to attend a local regatta as part of the level. Sailors will also learn about personal boat maintenance, seamanship and navigation to build great habits for their future. Additionally, they will become natural leaders at Junior Club, mentoring less experienced sailors and contributing to their success. (Lunch program included) (max 14 kids/session)


Prerequisite: CANSail 2

Learn to Race Program

Keen to try racing and sharpen your competitive skills on the water? This introductory racing program is the first step in the competitive pathway and will focus on learning the foundations of racing specific terminology, tactics, and boat handling. The program is intended for sailors that have a good grasp of the basic and intermediate sailing skills and are ready for the next challenge. Sailors will compete in their first local Club regatta and train under the leadership of an experienced racer, to grow their racing experience before moving on to the next level. (Lunch program included) (Max 8 kids/session)


Prerequisite: CANSail 1

Suggested Age: 8-13 Years Old

Session Length: 2 Weeks & Spring Intro

Optimist Race Team

Moving to an advanced race team, this group of sailors will be training with a class specific Optimist coach with a focus on performance and refined racing skills. The team will compete travel to regattas both locally and nationally to compete against the best. The team will focus on key events to ultimately, qualify for international Optimist teams. Spring and Fall training included. (max 8 Kids)


Prerequisite: Opti Development or Coach Recommendation

Session Length: Full Season – April to Oct

Optimist Development Team

After Learn to Race move to the next level of racing. This group of sailors will be training with a Class specific Optimist coach with a focus on improving and learning racing skills. The team will compete in local regattas to test their skills against others. The team will also learn a variety of other sailing skills such as seamanship and personal boat maintenance. Travel to local regattas is part of summer program. (Spring and fall training registration done separately) (Max 8 kids/session)

ILCA Race Team

This racing team consists of sailors pursuing the high-performance pathway and also seeking to expand further in sailing down the road. This program runs from Spring to Fall with additional Winter training opportunities also available. It will be led by a high-performance racing coach and travel to local and stage-appropriate regattas will be part of the program. Spring and Fall training included (Max 6 Kids)

This program introduces sailors to the ILCA 4 or 6 and is intended for those transiting from either the Optimist or other sailing streams. The focus will be on learning boat handling and racing skills as they learn to sail a new boat. C420 Race Team

Get ready to work as a team and compete in local regattas in the double-handed C420. Sailors team up in pairs to advance skills such as spinnaker and trapeze along with racing concepts. Communication and teamwork are key for success while competing against at various local events. Sailors are expected to advance their skills within in the team through training and competitions. Progression to the 29er Race Team will be encouraged. Spring and Fall training registration done separately. (Max 12kids/session)

The 29er skiff is a fast-paced and challenging double handed boat that will excite any experienced racer. Sailors will train to become proficient in boat handling and personal boat maintenance, while expanding their knowledge of racing tactics and strategy. Spring Training

Racers, get a jump on the sailing season with our Spring Training program. Sailors will train weekends and weeknights from April to June preparing for the season. Sailors will participate in regattas, some travel required.
